Outside of Sukiya Restaurant

Sukiya Restaurant Reviews by KCP Winter 2018 Students

Japanese food is made from regional and traditional foods all around the country and has evolved over the centuries into what we now know and enjoy it to be.

Gyūdon or beef bowl is one of the more popular Japanese fast food. It is beef simmered with onion in a mildly sweet sauce made from a fish and seaweed stock called dashi, sweet rice wine (mirin), and soy sauce. It is usually eaten with rice.

The Meiji Restoration or Renewal, was an event that restored practical imperial rule to the Empire of Japan in 1868 under the Emperor Meiji. It involved subsequent westernization and western customs such as eating beef was widely embraced and rapidly spread all throughout Japan. Gyūmeshi was a type of dish that gyūdon was derived from for the common folk. Gyūdon is also considered to have come from sukiyaki-don and gyūnabe, where thin slices of beef are cooked with vegetables in a pot, placed over rice, and served in a bowl.

Sukiya (すき家) is considered to be the largest gyudon restaurant chain. It has 1,964 restaurants scattered all around the 47 Japanese prefectures as of 2017, and more all around the world. Its slogan is straight to the point, written in romanji”save time and money”.

KCP’s Winter 2018 students share their thoughts and photos on Sukiya restaurant:

“This is the chain restaurant known as Sukiya. It is very close to KCP, only a 5-minute walk. It is right across from Hinoya Curry. Sukiya is sometimes referred to as the “Japanese McDonald’s” because it is a cheap Japanese fast-food chain. But, quick, cheap, and yummy options are great for KCP students!

If you are a new KCP student who is new to Japanese and Asian foods, I highly recommend Sukiya. It has a wide array of Japanese food options that I guarantee your tummy will like. For me, Sukiya was my first “baby steps” into trying Japanese cuisine.” – Holly Westbrook

“Sukiya is one of my favorite places to go. This Sukiya is super close to KCP. You can find this on the left side of the street when walking towards Shinjuku Gyoenmae Station when leaving KCP. Sukiya is great to go alone or with friends. There are a lot of options, so you’re bound to find something you’ll like. You can also get different sizes depending on how hungry you are or how much you want to spend. Sukiya has their own radio station which is amusing. This is a great place to come for something quick and tasty to eat after or before class! I would give Sukiya a 4/5★. ” – Siena Rose
